When heading out on the roads with a motorcycle, preparation is key. The lack of safety features found on cars such as airbags makes riding a dangerous proposition. To prevent serious injury, there are a number of steps that you can take to ensure that your ride is as smooth as possible before you even turn your engine on.

The Checklist

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has created a list of items and functions to check before heading out for a day of riding. They outline seven key safety checks:

  • Check your tires for any surface issues, and use a pressure gauge to check if there is enough pressure in the tire for a safe and proper ride
  • Inspect the controls. Make sure that the cables are unkinked and stiff, as issues with the cables could cause problems with the throttle and the brake while the motorcycle is in use
  • Check all lights on the motorcycle, such as the turn signals, headlights, and brake lights. Your horn and mirrors should also be checked at this time to make sure that you can see what’s behind you and can alert drivers of your presence.
  • Check oil levels, fuel gauges, and any form of liquid cooling the engine may have.
  • If the motorcycle has chain drive to its rear wheel, ensure that the chain has proper tension and is adequately lubricated.
  • Check the side stand and center stand for any issues. If a spring on either seems weak or is broken, replace it.
  • As you roll off, gently test the brakes to make sure they are functioning properly.
